AFL and Melamine Testing
The industrial chemical, melamine, is used in the processing of plastics and fertilizers. It is high in nitrogen content which can give a false positive boost to total protein content when tested using current analytical testing procedures. The Chinese companies responsible for the largest pet food recall in the United States added melamine to elevate protein levels in wheat gluten to a value which they guaranteed their buyers. This led to many deaths of dogs and cats throughout the country. The FDA quickly developed methods for detection of melamine in wheat gluten and dog food and Analytical Food Laboratories has adopted this methodology to provide our customers a service which will help ensure the quality of their vegetable protein products.
Rice protein concentrate, wheat gluten, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein, rice bran, protein, etc. are all imported vegetable protein products from China that are currently being tested for possible melamine contamination. These commodities are found in a number of items in food for human consumption, including baked goods, thickeners or fillers in processed meat products, cereal, infant formula, pastas, and cheeses. Whether it is questionable pet food, raw material or finished food item inquiry, Analytical Food Laboratories is here for our customers and we will be glad to help with any melamine concerns.
